With the classical genre of music taking hits in the public's eye, the closing of the New York Opera Company in 2013 was a huge blow to the communities of musicians that make up its large, traditional world. While financial troubles caused the company, one which branded itself as "The People's Opera," to close, it was not long before people began rallying to save the group and its theater.
This year (in fact, in the past few months) the company was revitalized under the direction of Tom Huizenga. Huizenga was formerly the director of a small company in Manhattan, so this was a large step in size for him - but not in work. He founded the company he previously directed in 1981, so this is not a new concept for him.
"The People's Opera" will be running their new season this year, with performances including "Tosca," "Pagliacci," and "Candide."
